A Bowl of Oxtail Gomtang to Restore My Energy

#16 Daemyeonggwan

On this trip, there were places I newly discovered,
but there were also places I had known for a long time.
Seongyeong Junchi Hoetjip is one of those places I already knew and liked,
and Daemyeonggwan, which I’m introducing this time, is the same.

Daemyeonggwan has a simple menu.

There are only oxtail gomtang and dogani-tang.
If you want both, you can order an extra portion.

I usually eat the oxtail gomtang.
When I have its rich yet clean broth,
it feels like my energy is being restored.

As usual, I stopped by the restaurant in the late afternoon,
a bit after lunchtime.
The place isn’t very large,
so I wanted to avoid the busy hours.

Since it was Sunday afternoon,
it wasn’t completely empty,
but there were plenty of seats available.

As soon as I sat down and ordered one oxtail gomtang,
the table was quickly set.

Well-fermented kimchi, seasoned chives,
stir-fried anchovies, soybean sprouts,
kkakdugi, stir-fried king oyster mushrooms,
and spicy marinated raw crab.
And finally, the oxtail gomtang.

Of course, the main character of this table is the oxtail gomtang,
but there is an unexpectedly outstanding supporting character,
and that is the spicy marinated raw crab.

Every side dish is good,
and even the stir-fried anchovies are exactly my style.

But this spicy marinated raw crab is a real delicacy.

There used to be a time when refills of the crab were free.
When I visited with friends,
we would refill it several times.

Now there is an extra charge for additional crab.
It’s a bit disappointing,
but I think that’s only natural.

Now, here is the long-awaited oxtail gomtang.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t take a photo of the hearty oxtail bones
and the meat attached to them,
but there is a generous amount of oxtail inside that bowl.
The meat attached to the bones has been simmered for a long time,
so it’s very tender.

Recently, I’ve heard that since the son took over running the restaurant,
the price has gone up and the taste has changed.

The price, which used to be inexpensive,
has simply been adjusted to the level of other oxtail gomtang restaurants,
so that’s understandable.

As for the taste,
it has become a bit cleaner than before,
but not to the extent that it feels like a completely different place.

So I think it’s still a restaurant I can keep
on my personal list of favorites.

A place I occasionally visit during a trip
to restore my energy,
Daemyeonggwan in the old downtown of Mokpo.

Once again, I leave well fed.
