    #17 Kagoshima Port Area

Scenes from the Street: Part 3

This post is a collection of photos and short videosfrom the Kagoshima Port area, where the Fish Market, Waterfront Park, and Kagoshima Aquarium are located. Aside from short comments for each photo, there isn’t much writing this time. Hope you enjoy it. First, I walked toward the Kagoshima Fish Market. Kagoshima doesn’t actually have many tourist spots, and I’ve already visited the famous places on previous trips. So while checking Google Maps,I decided to walk to the “Fish Market” after a light lunch in Tenmonkan. It was quite a long walk to the fish market, and maybe because it was lunchtime, everything felt strangely…

A Gentle, Healthy Bowl of Soba

    #16 Tenjinbo Marushin

A Gentle, Healthy Bowl of Soba

The theme of this trip is actually a “birthday trip.”And today is my birthday. I already booked a pretty expensive restaurant for dinner tonight. So for lunch, I wanted something light and easy to digest. After drinking a bit too much last night,I thought it’d be better to soothe my stomach firstso I could enjoy dinner properly. At times like this, soba is what comes to mind. Buckwheat noodles are gentle on the stomach, and warm soba broth always feels comforting. So I searched for soba restaurants in Kagoshima on Tabelog. That’s how I found Tenjinbo Marushin (天神房 丸新), located in the…

    #15 Around Tenmonkan

Scenes from the Street: Part 2

There are many reasons why I love traveling to Kagoshima. Fresh and delicious ingredients,an incredible variety of shōchū,the hot spring at Shiroyama Hotel, and the view of Sakurajima — all those things, of course. But there’s one more reason. And it’s a bit unusual. Kagoshima has only one downtown area. Of course, there are shopping malls and restaurantsnear Kagoshima-Chūō Station, and some unique bars around Meizanbori. There are also nice cafés and restaurants near the City Museum of Art. But even if you combine all of those areas together, they still don’t beat the liveliness of Tenmonkan. If you’re looking for bars or…

Shochu Lovers, This Is Your Place

Shochu Lovers, This Is Your Place

Whenever you talk about Kagoshima, you can’t avoid talking about shochu. And when you talk about shochu in Japan, you can’t avoid mentioning Kagoshima. That’s how deeply connected this city is with shochu —“Shochu means Kagoshima, and Kagoshima means shochu.” So for a Kagoshima trip, shochu is essential. It’s one of the biggest reasons why I travel to this city. Of course, Kagoshima is a city of shochu, so you can find it anywhere.Even ordinary restaurants often have ten, twenty, or more varieties. You don’t need to search hard to taste the famous ones. But! If you’re truly into shochu, you eventually end up…

    Sushi with Kagoshima’s Seasonal Fish

    #13 Sushi Kaoru

    Sushi with Kagoshima’s Seasonal Fish

I often travel to Japan, but strangely I don’t eat sushi much during trips.I’m not sure why — it just happens that way. Maybe because many good sushi restaurants require reservations, while I usually decide where to eat on a whim.So I end up in izakayas for dinner and drinks, rather than sushi counters. I also tend to prefer local specialties over sushi. In Kyoto, I’d want kaiseki, and in Kagoshima, I’d rather have Kurobuta shabu-shabu. This time, though, I felt differently. I wanted to taste Kagoshima’s seasonal ingredients at their best.Especially the fish, overshadowed by Kurobuta on my past trips. So before arriving,…

A Bold First Impression, a Generous Taste

A Bold First Impression, a Generous Taste

When people think of Kagoshima, the first thing that comes to mind is kuro-buta — black pork. I usually prefer to eat it as shabu-shabu, but there’s another famous Japanese dish made from pork: tonkatsu. If you search for restaurants while planning a trip to Kagoshima, you’ll soon notice that the most common type of restaurant there is the one that serves both “kuro-buta shabu-shabu and tonkatsu.” When I look for good places to eat in Japan,I don’t really trust Google Maps ratings. So where do I search instead? I usually use Tabelog. If I want to eat tonkatsu, I just look…

    Recovery with Kurobuta Pork

    #11 Shiroyama Hotel Suiren

    Recovery with Kurobuta Pork

It had been a while since I travelled, and maybe because of that, on the first night of the trip I drank much later than intended. Thanks to that (or because of that?), the second day of the trip became a full rest day. I soaked in the hot spring, and lay on the bed.I skipped lunch, surviving on vitamin drinks and electrolyte drinks. My condition was really bad. Still, I thought I should eat dinner. So I went down to the lobby concierge and asked if I could go to a hotel restaurant right away. Shiroyama Hotel has many restaurants.Among…
