Scenes from the Street: Part 1
#10 Around Kagoshima-Chuo Station

These are photos and clips I took during my Kagoshima trip, mostly around Kagoshima-Chuo Station (鹿児島中央駅). It’s the biggest station in the city. There is also another one called Kagoshima Station (鹿児島駅), but that one doesn’t serve the shinkansen and sits in a quiet area. The busiest district in Kagoshima is Tenmonkan (天文館),but around Kagoshima-Chuo Station there’s also a big bus terminal – where airport buses depart – and several large shopping malls. It’s not as lively as Tenmonkan, but there are many izakaya and restaurants here,so while traveling in Kagoshima, I found myself coming back to this area quite…

The Final Ritual of Drinking: Hakata Ramen
#9 Hakata KIKI

One of the biggest reasons I travel to Japan is, honestly, for drinking. Whisky, wine, sake(nihonshu), shochu – almost every kind of alcohol except Korean traditional liquor is cheaper and more varied in Japan. And for someone like me who usually drinks alone, Japan is heaven. There are so many bars that serve wine or sake by the glass,so I can try different things without overdoing it. When I travel in Japan, I usually spend more nights drinking than sightseeing during the day. And at the end of every “drinking activity,” I always eat ramen.Since Japan doesn’t have a hangover culture…

Shochu Bar Often Visited by Foreigners
#8 ROKU

As I mentioned in the previous post, Kagoshima is known for its rich local ingredients and its shochu. There are many shochu bars here, and this one – Shochu Bar ROKU – is one of my favorites. It’s located in Tenmonkan, along Nikanbashi-dori. The first kanji in Kagoshima means “deer,” pronounced roku in Japanese. And when you drink shochu, there are a few ways to have it — roku, mizuwari, sodawari, and so on.The word roku here comes from the Japanese pronunciation of “on the rocks.” So, the name “ROKU” refers both to Kagoshima itself and to a way of…

Shochu Bar for Kagoshima Locals
#7 Sasakura

Kagoshima is famous not only for its meats – Kurobuta(black pork), Kuroge Wagyu(black-haired beef), and Jidori(local chicken) –but also for its seafood such as Katsuo(bonito), Kibinago(silver-stripe round herring), Madai(red sea bream), Saba(mackerel), and Ise-ebi(spiny lobster). Among all of these, I think the most famous product of Kagoshima is shochu. The distilled spirits made from Kagoshima’s Satsuma-imo(sweet potato) come in many varieties, and their flavors and aromas have such a wide spectrum that they’re always fun to explore. Plus, prices are very reasonable in Kagoshima, which makes the city a dream destination for drink lovers like me. That’s exactly why I…

Kagoshima Autumn Sea, on One Plate
#6 Fisherman’s Cuisine Uosho

It was the first evening in Kagoshima. I wondered what kind of place and what kind of meal would be good for dinner. Of course, the main reason I came to Kagoshima was to eat Kurobuta(pork from Kagoshima black pigs) shabu-shabu. But now it’s autumn, the season when fish get fattier. Kagoshima is famous not only for beef, pork, and chicken but also for fresh seafood. Strangely, in my previous trips to Kagoshima, I hardly ate fish. Alright then – tonight is a fish night! I searched on Tabelog and Google Maps — and even got some help from ChatGPT.…

Where Kagoshima Begins, for Me
#5 Shiroyama Hotel Kagoshima

This is my fourth time in Kagoshima. During my Kyushu round trip, I first came here to go to Yakushima. But I fell in love with the charm of Kurobuta(Kagoshima’s black pork) and shōchū,and since then, it has become a place I visit again whenever I have time. Out of my four trips to Kagoshima,I stayed at the same hotel three times. If I visit Kagoshima again, I’ll definitely stay at the same place. That’s how much I like this hotel. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever written a separate post just about a hotel, but this one is a big…

Riding Along Kagoshima Bay
#4 The Limited Express Kirishima

Usually, my trips are not this busy. I’m starting to feel tired – no, I am tired. I barely slept last night, left for the airport at dawn, took an early morning flight, then a bus to Kirishima Jingu. Now I just want to get to my hotel and rest. Let’s hurry to Kagoshima! From the bus stop at the Kirishima Jingu rotary,I took the bus down to Kirishima Jingu Station. Outside the window, it was pure countryside –a narrow road through the woods, scattered houses, and almost no people in sight. After about fifteen minutes, I arrived at the…
