A Walk in a Small Harbor Town
#5 Scenes of Yobuko

After looking around the Yobuko Morning Market, I had a glass of jibiru. The next plan was to take a sightseeing boat to Nanatsugama (七ツ釜), which I had found on Google Maps. From the photos, the scenery looked very impressive. The sightseeing boats depart from Marine Pal Yobuko. It is right in front of the bus terminal and not far from the morning market. Yobuko itself is not a large town, so everything is gathered around the center of the village. There are two types of sightseeing boats you can take here. One is the JIRA (ジーラ), where you can…

A Morning Market in a Small Port Town
#4 Yobuko Morning Market

It rained quite a bit overnight, but it started to clear from early morning. Thanks to that, I was able to take a short walk around the ryokan. The weather forecast had said it would rain all day.So I was even thinking of giving up all my plans and checking into a hotel in Karatsu instead.Thankfully, the rain stopped and I could move as planned. It was truly the luckiest moment of this trip. After breakfast, I checked out of the ryokan. The first plan of the day was to visit Yobuko Morning Market (呼子朝市). If I walked from the ryokan, I…

#3 Dinner and Breakfast at Onoue Ryokan

As I mentioned in the previous post, there was only one reason I booked a ryokan in Yobuko. To enjoy Yobuko ika at a relaxed pace. For that, I reserved Onoe Ryokan, which accepts solo guests in Yobuko. After transferring trains several times, I finally arrived. After check-in, unpacking, and a bath in the large public bath, it was finally time for dinner. It wasn’t an expensive luxury ryokan, so I wasn’t expecting an extravagant meal. But when I made the reservation, I made sure that “Yobuko ika” was included in the dinner. That meant I would be able to…

Good Value Ryokan in Yobuko
#2 Onoue Ryokan

I planned an itinerary to stay one night in Yobuko (呼子). The reason was, of course, food and alcohol. The reason people stop by Yobuko is to eat Yobuko ika, right? Naturally, you should have a drink with it. And when it comes to drinking, once you start, it often becomes first round, second round… and you end up drinking more and more. So if you visit somewhere in order to eat something delicious, I think it is better to book accommodation as well and drink comfortably. Besides, when you stay one night, you can see scenery that you would…

This trip is to Saga.
#1 Prologue

Including my round trip around Kyushu in 2017, I had been under the illusion that I had visited most of Kyushu. Then not long ago, I realized that I had never once been to Saga Prefecture. I had even skipped it while circling all of Kyushu. When I try to think of famous cities in Saga, nothing immediately comes to mind, so perhaps it was easy to overlook. Even the Japanese people I met during my travels reacted as if to say, “That makes sense.” When I started planning this trip, Saga came to mind. Right next to Fukuoka, yet…

This trip was Mokpo.
#20 Epilogue

The last day of a trip always requires a bit of diligence. Since I usually start my days quite late, getting out of the hotel before checkout timeis actually a rather difficult task for me. This morning, I managed to be diligent again.I packed my bags, took a bus,and came out near Mokpo Station. I had lunch around the station. My train was at 2 p.m.There was some time left, but with nothing particular to do,I decided to simply spend the timein the waiting hall at Mokpo Station. As I was spending time in the waiting hall… huh? There was a train going…

A Plate of Tteokgalbi in a Port City
#19 Seong-sikdang

When I first set out on this trip, I didn’t expect to stay in Mokpo for four nights.I planned to spend about two nights in Mokpo, and use the remaining two nights to visit Gunsan. So I only booked a hotel for two nights. For various reasons, I ended up staying in Mokpo for four nights, and I think that turned out to be the better choice. There was just one small regret.I wanted to go to Gunsan and eat tteokgalbi at Wanjuok. ※ Tteokgalbi is a Korean grilled patty made from minced beef short ribs. I like the soft beef tteokgalbi from…
